410/420 Stainless Steel Bar

UNS S41000/UNS S42000

Stainless steel 410/420, also known as UNS S41000 and UNS S42000, is considered a basic martensitic stainless steel. Comprised of 11.5% to 13.5% chromium and iron, along with trace amounts of other elements including carbon, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur. After heat treatment, Stainless Steel 410 exhibits high mechanical properties, it is magnetic in both hardened and annealed conditions. Upon specification, Stainless Steel 410 can be delivered in a hardened, yet still machinable state for uses where moderate corrosion resistance and high strength are required. Stainless Steel 410 reaches maximum corrosion resistance when hardened, tempered and polished. It can be welded using most common welding methods, hot worked between 2000° F and 2200° F, as well as, cold formed and annealed. Because of all of these traits it is widely considered the “general purpose grade” of stainless steel.

UNS S42000, commonly known as Stainless Steel 420 is the high carbon content version of Stainless Steel 410. Corrosion resistance is similar between the two, but Stainless Steel 420 additionally provides increased strength and hardness. Like Stainless Steel 410 it is also considered a “general purpose grade” including at least 12% chromium, which is enough to give it acceptable corrosion resistance. Typically, Stainless Steel 420 achieves its best corrosion resistance when the alloy is hardened and polished, or surface ground.

Stainles Steel 410 Grade: Introduction & Properties

Stainless Steel 410 is a type of stainless steel that is part of the martensitic steel. This category of stainless steel is characterized by its high hardness and strength, which comes from its high carbon content and the heat treatment processes it undergoes. Stainless Steel 410 contains a higher amount of chromium compared to other stainless steels, which provides it with good corrosion resistance.

Chromium (Cr): 11.5% – 13.5%
Carbon (C): Up to 0.15% – 0.20%
Manganese (Mn): 1.0% max
Silicon (Si): 1.0% max

Phosphorus (P): 0.04% max
Sulfur (S): 0.03% max

2. Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: 480 – 700 MPa
Yield Strength: 275 – 450 MPa
Elongation: 15 – 20% (in 50 mm)
Hardness: Can be hardened to 45 HRC (Rockwell Hardness Scale)

3. Corrosion Resistance

Stainless steel 410 has good corrosion resistance against atmospheric conditions and mild acids. It performs well in environments where it is exposed to air and water but can be prone to corrosion in more severe conditions.

4. Heat Treatment

SS 410 can be hardened by heat treatment to increase its hardness and strength. It can be heat treated at temperatures between 815°C to 900°C (1500°F to 1650°F), followed by quenching and tempering.

5. Magnetic Properties

Stainless Steel 410 is magnetic due to its martensitic structure, which differentiates it from austenitic stainless steels like 304 or 316, which are typically non-magnetic.

6. Machinability

Good machinability, especially in the hardened state. It can be readily machined and welded, though special techniques might be needed for welding due to its high carbon content.
